Map Your City: Using OpenStreetMap for Urban Resilience

OpenStreetMap data can be used for a variety of purposes, ranging from recreational uses by an individual, to planning efforts by government bodies. It is quickly becoming the standard for baseline data around the world and is freely accessible under the Open Database License (ODbL), meaning that it can be queried, used, manipulated, contributed to and redistributed in any form as long as the contributors are credited. As more of the world's population becomes concentrated within cities, better resilience planning is needed to face the increases in the frequency and severity of disasters affecting urban areas. Effective planning requires baseline data of the whole city, including vulnerable communities and often neglected areas, and especially those in underrepresented groups. This training will not only provide participants with an understanding of OpenStreetMap and how it can be applied to help challenges faced in their cities. Participants will learn how to map their own environments at the building level with aerial imagery, collect detailed attribute information on the ground with a mobile application and export the data through an online tool for effective analysis and planning.
