Urbanisation has significant impacts on rural areas, and demand for food is perhaps the most important, together for demand for other natural resources (water, fuelwood, etc.). In many regions of the world we are witnessing an increase in production, especially of perishable and high-value products such as fruit, vegetables and dairy, responding to urban demand. This is especially the case in rural areas that are well connected to urban markets by transport links, communications and electricity, and by networks of local traders

Mah Meri Cultural Village Carey Island
Carey Island, this Orang Asli village is well worth a visit to learn about the distinct culture and traditions of the Mah Meri, a subgroup of the Senoi people who live along the coast of Selangor. The Mah Meri are renowned for their masterful woodcarving and expressive masks worn during dance rituals to represent ancestral spirits. The village museum for excellent displays of Mah Meri art with accompanying texts explaining the mythologies and local legends informing each piece, such as the story of a tiger trapped in a cage that inspired one of the Mah Meri's most iconic wood sculptures.
