Urban heritage in the Malaysia, currently face intensified urban problems as a result of rapid population growth, economic development and population growth. The introduction of new townships at the edge of many historic cities in Malaysia has exposed them to severe pressure of commercialization, poor design and cultural uniformity that has faded away their place identity. Thus, regeneration initiatives should be introduced to restore the wealth of the prestigious past of the historic cities and to improve the lifestyle of its population, as the vibrancy of a heritage site is only significant when its original community remains.

Melaka
Melaka is known for its diverse colonial influences that blend harmoniously with the local culture, most evidently reflected in its old city centre. With its colonial buildings, churches, squares and fortifications, Melaka demonstrates early stages of history originating in the 15th-century Malay sultanate the Portuguese and Dutch periods beginning in the early 16th century.
Melaka is exceptional example of multi-cultural trading town in Southeast Asia, representing from the mercantile and exchanges of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Arab cultures and three successive European colonial powers for almost 500 years, each with its imprints on the architecture and urban form, technology and monumental art.
Historical City of Melaka Municipal Council (MBMB) and Melaka Museums Corporation (PERZIM) are the two State agencies which administer and manage the conservation of heritage sites in the State with the advice from the State Preservation and Conservation Committee established under the State Enactment of 1988 and the Historic Melaka City Council’s Conservation Committee.
