Summary

Community based urban resilience is at the core of the New Urban Agenda and other key international policies, which are calling for urgent action to enhance the short and long terms adaptive capacity of cities. An increasing number of cities and local communities are embarking in resilient planning and developing different urban resilience actions, that are related to diverse specific aspects of resilience including disaster risk reduction, disaster recovery, long term adaptation.
The current knowledge divide between research and local action on urban resilience is lowering the understanding of which solutions are (not) working and why, reducing the potential of replication and upscaling, as well as impairing the impact of such actions, leading also to unnecessary replication of efforts.
The side event aims to advance knowledge co-creation on community-based urban resilience, portraying different case studies and best practices worldwide, within different regional and national contexts. These experiences will outline the importance of systemic and integrated approaches able to generate co-benefits and responding with policies, plans and action to the challenges set by the Sustainable Development Goals, the New Urban Agenda, the Paris Agreement and the Sendai Framework of Action, at once in an integrated manner.
Moreover, this event addresses planning theory and practice for urban resilient transition, exploring planning experiences able to create co-benefits, coupling adaptation/ mitigation to climate change with the development agenda, exploiting the potential of resilience transition for improving quality of life and creating space for socio-economic innovation, through the empowerment of local communities and practitioners.
The panelist and the audience will be called to contribute to the identification of knowledge gaps on urban resilience, that will be used as input to inform the IPCC’s Cities and Climate Change Scientific Conference in March 2018.
