Following UNIDO’s commitment to the New Urban Agenda in November 2016, the event will highlight the significance and potential of sustainable cities as hubs for innovation, low carbon industrialization and climate action. Concrete project examples that were implemented during the last year in Cote d’Ivoire, India, Malaysia and Senegal, will be showcased. Building on early lessons learned, the event will facilitate panel discussion around the challenges faced by municipal authorities in implementing the New Urban Agenda. Required policy mechanisms and enabling conditions, as well as partnerships that facilitate industrial-urban symbiosis for inclusive and sustainable development of cities, will be illustrated.
Moreover, the event will demonstrate the importance of initiatives, such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) that offer municipal stakeholders an international platform to exchange ideas, and to showcase potential projects for which further investment is required. Ultimately, participants will benefit from the early lessons learned in implementing the New Urban Agenda, as well as knowledge and know-how exchange regarding enabling and scale up mechanisms for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda.
