To foster well-being in cities and create safe, inclusive, accessible, public spaces for all, we need to re-think and raise awareness of the importance of the main relational realm: the public space. Particularly critical is a kind of public realm that is pervading our cities: the semi-private space. This space, which often presents the highest levels of relational urban life, is characterised by complex mechanisms of production and control that limit the exercise of the Right to the City.
The Event will address the emerging socio-spatial problems in the production of semi-public spaces, using a comparative urbanism perspective, and focusing on the transformation caused by new digitally augmented geographies.
Its objectives are: to address one of the key areas of concern raised by the NUA related to open space and the SDGs 3, 10, 11 and 17 in cities in rapid urbanisation; to share and discuss research that advocates the Right to the City concerned with the transformation of publicness in urban public space; to create a platform for knowledge exchange and networking amongst stakeholders, which builds capacity in both research and everyday actions.
The core activity of the Event is group work and discussion on the following topics: 1) the emerging meta-public space – new conditions where public and private are permanently recombined; 2) the transformation of quasi-public space – private pervasion of the public in the age of experience economy; 3) the usage of privately owned public spaces – neoliberalism and deprivation of centrality in key urban public places; 4) the postcolonial de- and re-territorialisations – continuing issues with the recognition of native population spatialities; 5) the differentiation of space in rapid gentrification processes – dynamics of the molecular entrepreneurial city; 6) public space and gender; 7) youths and public space; 8) digital geographies and everyday re-appropriation of public space – augmented reality and new spaces of resistance.
