Summary

Over the last years, the international community has acquired relevant instruments for the future of the world and the well-being of its citizens. These are the Agenda 2030 adopted on 2015 to achieve Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda, adopted on 2016 in Quito, during Habitat III. The 17 goals and 169 targets demonstrate the scope and ambition of the new universal agenda, which will require a substantial effort to formulate national and local policies and the mobilization of resources for its implementation. One of the key challenges of the SDGs is to ensure that 'No one is left behind'. Adopted a year after the New Urban Agenda seems to be a response to the expectations of the international community. In its Article 11, the New Cities Agenda emphasizes the need for citizens participation and engagement towards equitable, safe, healthy, accessible and affordable human settlements. Resilient and sustainable cities call for the participation and engagement of actors at every stage of the decision-making process, from planning to the development of human settlements, but also the mobilization of resources for the funding of local sustainable development. If these Agendas have been adopted by the Heads of States and Governments after lengthy negotiation processes, their localization and operationalization in the territories must be done quickly enough to expect tangible results with time.

In different continents, participatory social inclusion governance practices and approaches to promote the right to the city and operationalize the New Urban Agenda and the SDG are tempted by cities. These experiences have given quite encouraging results to share. The networking session organize by Enda ECOPOP will allow sharing experiences and innovations around the word, in response to the guidelines of the New Urban Agenda for sustainable cities in order to leave no one behind.
